Canonical Membership is the essence of being in a mission as an MMS sister by undergoing the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, trusting in God's goodness and care through prayers and through our communities for life. League of Gratitude – Its Evolution Fund raising activities started as early as in the late 1960s when the Friends of the Medical Mission Sisters was initiated by Mrs. Pacifico, a friend of Sister Felicitas Aranda. Concerts and membership drives were held to increase their number. The early members were composed mainly of families of MMS sisters. This group was sustained by updates on the developments in the MMS. By then , the League of Gratitude became a vehicle for sustaining personal relationships. It was purely a fund raising project for obtaining financial contributions to meet mission needs of the MMS. In the 1970s and 1980s, the de Joya family helped make our cause known through exhibits and other activities in connection with vocation promotion. With change of personnel through the years, there were changes in the manner of publication and fund raising. In 1990, the District Assembly appointed a committee of four sisters to look into the League of Gratitude (LG) and reorganize it toward the following purposes:
In 1997, a three-sister team was formed to take care of the LG and its activities. From being a purely fund raising body, the LG focused its thrust on the element of prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for all the blessings received. This came about from the observation that donations have become an expression of gratitude from the donors who gave them as thanksgiving offerings for our prayer and for the graces they have been receiving from God. Emphasis was more on the LG prayer movement in which donations were tokens of the donors' gratitude to the Lord, a sharing of the gifts that the donors receive from above. This year 2007, the LG is taking a further step along becoming a spiritual ministry in the light of Henri Nouwen's thoughts on fund raising. This is in line with the trend in which LG activities had been carried out. The main idea is that all that we have are gifts from God. They are poured over us, not only to answer our own needs but also to be shared with those who have less or none at all. This is a ministry of love, of relationship, of creating community of the poor in material resources with those who are poor in spirit. This is a way of building the Kingdom here on earth – one which will reach out beyond chronological existence. This is a holistic call to the faithful, just as Jesus calls us to be faithful. |
